Cultural Harmony and Education: A Study on the Awareness of Traditional Music Among Students

Abstract

Local songs are vital to cultural heritage, reflecting the life and values of communities. This study examines Hasanuddin University students' understanding of South Sulawesi's local songs, emphasizing cultural diversity and identity. Conducted through a quantitative survey involving 22 students from various faculties, the research assessed students' familiarity and comprehension of these songs. Results show that most students know at least one local song, yet their understanding of the lyrics' meanings varies significantly. Songs like "Anging Mamiri" are better understood than others like "Ati Raja." The findings suggest that the integration of local culture and language education requires enhancement. Many students have initial knowledge of local songs, but their deeper understanding of the underlying values and meanings is limited. This points to a need for more effective educational methods to preserve and teach cultural heritage. The study highlights the importance of incorporating cultural and language education in university curricula to bolster national identity and cultural awareness, preparing students to be future custodians of cultural heritage, particularly through the unique specific ethnic dialect used in these local songs.
