Abstract

Films as a medium of mass communication have significant potential in representing cultural elements and social stratification. This study analyzes the representation of social classes in the film "Uang Panai" (2016), which depicts the marriage traditions of the Bugis-Makassar community. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Antonio Gramsci's hegemony theory, this research aims to understand the dynamics of power and social class influence as reflected in the film's narrative. Data were collected through content analysis of dialogues, settings, and character interactions. The results show that the film "Uang Panai" portrays social classes as a hegemonic tool, where the upper class uses the tradition of "uang panai" to maintain status and power, while the lower class is forced to accommodate economically burdensome demands. These findings confirm Gramsci's theory of hegemony, where the dominant class utilizes ideology and culture to maintain their dominance. This study highlights the importance of understanding cultural context in media representation analysis and suggests a more critical approach to media consumption, particularly in interpreting representations of social class and power.
