Angngaru’ Tradition in Academic Perspective: A Study on Cultural Awareness Among Indonesian Literature Students

Abstract

The Angngaru’ tradition, a sacred oath historically taken by Makassar warriors or leaders, forms a crucial part of the local cultural heritage. However, awareness of this tradition among the younger generation, particularly students, remains under-documented. This study employed a quantitative approach to assess the knowledge level of Indonesian Literature students from the 2023 class at Hasanuddin University. A survey completed by 26 respondents aimed to test hypotheses concerning the dissemination of cultural knowledge about Angngaru’. Results indicated that out of 26 students, 23 possessed substantial knowledge of the Angngaru’ tradition, reflecting a significant understanding among the participants. Despite widespread awareness, variations in the depth and accuracy of this understanding were observed, suggesting that integrating cultural and language education into academic curricula could enhance both comprehension and preservation of such traditions. The study highlights the critical role of cultural and language education in university settings to ensure deep and accurate understanding of cultural heritage, vital for maintaining cultural identity amidst rapid globalization and modernization. This integration is essential not only for preserving performance aspects of culture but also for fostering profound generational knowledge, particularly through the unique Makassar dialect used in Angngaru’ texts.
